The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully recovered and handed over ₦42.5 million to Mrs. Margret Odofin, a 70-year-old Nigerian widow and retiree, who was defrauded by her bank account and investment officer, Mrs. Kehinde Yusuf.

The handover, was conducted at the EFCC’s Kaduna Zonal Directorate on Thursday, though the suspect, Mrs. Yusuf, had fled to the United Kingdom after the crime was discovered.

Mrs. Odofin, the victim, was allegedly lured by her bank officer, Mrs. Kehinde Yusuf, into a fake investment scheme between November and December 2020. The fraud was uncovered when Odofin realized approximately ₦47 million had been unauthorizedly withdrawn from her account.

The widow had initially sought redress in the UK, where the suspect had fled, but was advised to report the crime to Nigerian authorities since the offense was committed locally.

The recovery and handover were confirmed by the EFCC through a statement shared on its official X handle on Friday. The bank draft was presented by the Kaduna Zonal Directorate’s acting director, Bawa Kaltungo, on behalf of the Executive Chairman, Ola Olukoyede.

‎Mrs. Odofin filed her petition with the EFCC in December 2024, stating how Yusuf had promised a quarterly return of ₦1.7 million on the investment, leading to the unauthorized withdrawal of the total sum of ₦47 million.

‎The victim expressed relief and gratitude during the handover ceremony.

‎I cannot believe this because when we reported this case in the United Kingdom where Mrs Kehinde Yusuf absconded, after defrauding me, they said the offence was committed in Nigeria, hence they advised that we report to it the EFCC, which we did and today I am singing to the glory of God because God has used the commission to wipe away my tears. I have waited for years to get my hard-earned money back.
