The terrorist group Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has reportedly reacted strongly to the United States President Donald Trump’s threat of potential military action in Nigeria, describing the U.S. leader as a “reckless American tyrant”.
The group explicitly warned President Trump against an invasion, urging its fighters to adopt stricter operational security measures in anticipation of foreign military action.
ISWAP’s reaction follows President Trump’s recent decisions to redesignate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) over alleged Christian genocide and his order for the U.S. Department of War to prepare military contingency plans.
Details of the extremist group’s message were revealed by security expert Zagazola Makama on his official X handle, who reported that the message was circulated on ISWAP’s usual communication channels.
According to Makama, ISWAP claimed that President Trump was being manipulated by evangelical Christian and Jewish advisers and that the U.S. threat was an attempt to place the United States as a global defender of Christians.
The group used the threat to issue a call for unity among Muslims in West Africa, urging them to unite and take the alleged U.S. threat seriously, also accusing the West of crimes against African Muslims.
Makama reported that the extremists issued warnings to their fighters to avoid large gatherings, limit movement and to avoid the use of smart phones, in anticipation of the planned U.S. intelligence potential drone strikes, reportedly submitted by the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) to the Pentagon.
The Nigerian government has repeatedly denied the U.S. allegations of “Christian genocide,” arguing that both Christian and Muslim citizens are victims of indiscriminate attacks by various insurgent and criminal groups. Nigeria has maintained its position that the violence is not religiously motivated, but complex, and has rejected any form of foreign military interference that infringes on its sovereignty.
