The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC),  which supplies power to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and three other states, has commenced a sweeping exercise affecting approximately 800 employees.

The mass layoff, confirmed to have started on Wednesday, November 5, due to the escalating inflation, high living costs, and public dissatisfaction with erratic power supply across Nigeria.

The retrenchment at AEDC follows several months of internal restructuring aimed at improving the efficiency and finances of the firm.

‎Sources familiar with the development revealed that the final number of sacked employees, 800, was reached during negotiations between the management and two major unions, the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) and the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC).

According to a source who preferred to be anonymous, stated;

The management wanted to sack 1,800, but after much pressure, they brought it down to 800. The unions initially insisted that nobody should be sacked, but later they allegedly agreed to sack 800

The management assured all affected staff that their due entitlements would be processed upon the completion of an “Exit Clearance process”, which includes returning all company property. Applicable statutory deductions, such as PAYE and check-off dues, would be made during payment.
