The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has dismissed recent allegations of a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria as false and inflammatory, cautioning that such claims could worsen insecurity and destabilise the region.
In a statement released Tuesday, ECOWAS stressed that terrorist groups operating across West Africa, including Nigeria, target civilians indiscriminately, regardless of their religion, ethnicity, or age. Independent reports confirm that violence by these insurgents affects both Muslims, Christians, and followers of other faiths alike.
ECOWAS urged international partners, including the United Nations, to reject misleading narratives that foster division, and to continue their support to West African governments in their fight against terrorism.
ECOWAS strongly rejects these false and divisive narratives that seek to deepen insecurity in communities and weaken social cohesion in the region
This comes after US President Donald Trump alleged that Christians were being massacred in Nigeria and threatened to suspend aid due to the reported killings.
ECOWAS reaffirmed its commitment to member states facing insurgency challenges, calling for enhanced global cooperation to combat terrorism in the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin.
