Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced that it now produces 45 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and 25 million litres of diesel daily, surpassing Nigeria’s domestic demand and promising a stable fuel supply nationwide.
The refinery made this disclosure in a statement released on Friday, pledge to support the energy security of the country and most importantly reducing reliance on imported petroleum products. This announcement comes after public debate of the recent approval of a 15 percent import duty on PMS, diesel, and jet fuel to protect local refineries.
Despite Dangote Refinery’s commencement of operations over a year ago, Nigeria still imports about 67 percent of its daily petroleum consumption. Dangote insists its 650,000 barrel-per-day facility can meet national needs and views the tariff as a step toward industrial growth and energy independence.
Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer of Dangote Industries Limited, Anthony Chiejina, emphasized the importance of the tariff in safeguarding domestic industry from unfair competition.
He also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to approve the import duty, calling it a transformative policy that encourages investment, industrialisation, and job creation.
It is unpatriotic to criticise the tariff, it is a necessary step to protect our local refineries and secure Nigeria’s energy future
He stressed that increased local production has helped stabilise the exchange rate of the country and also strengthen the naira by reducing foreign currency outflows.
The company also urges stronger enforcement against illegal dumping to protect local industries.
