The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed the appointment of General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).
General Oluyede, along with the other Service Chiefs, appeared before the Senate for screening, which was conducted to endorse the military leadership changes initiated by President Bola Tinubu to reform the national security apparatus.
The appointments were initially announced following a sweeping shake-up in the armed forces, with the President urging the Senate to grant expeditious consideration to the nominations.
General Oluyede, 56, is a seasoned officer who previously served as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and commanded the elite Infantry Corps. His experience includes participating in several domestic and international operations, such as the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) Mission in Liberia and Operation HADIN KAI in Nigeria’s restive North East.
The Presidency states that these changes aim to strengthen the national security architecture and improve coordination among Nigeria’s defense and intelligence agencies, a critical goal given the persistent security challenges facing the country, including banditry, insurgency, and kidnapping.
The President has urged the new commanders to justify the confidence reposed in them by upholding professionalism, unity, and vigilance.
