DSS arrests social media user for calling for military coup

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a social media user identified as Innocent Chukwuma for posting messages that called on the military to overthrow the current government of President Bola Tinubu.

The arrest took place in Oyigbo, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, shortly after the user published the remarks on the social media platform X.

The arrest occurs after the heightened climate of sensitivity regarding national security and potential political instability in Nigeria. Recently, there have been unconfirmed reports concerning an attempted coup plot against the democratically elected government. These rumors led to the reported cancellation of the 65th independence anniversary parade.

While the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) officially described the coup reports as false and misleading earlier in the month, public debates intensified following President Tinubu’s recent decision to replace the Service Chiefs.

The arrested individual, under the handle “@TheAgroman”, ‎directly urged the military to suspend the Nigerian government and join an unspecified group, claiming that “Only the military can reset this country.” Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999 after decades of military governance, and calls for a coup are considered a severe threat to the constitutional order.
