ADC accuses the government of manipulating food prices for political gain

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), has accused the Federal Government of insincerity regarding the recent reduction in food prices. The ADC contends that the price drop, which contrasts with months of soaring inflation, is “artificial” and not the result of sustainable local production.

Nigeria’s economy has undeniably experienced backdrops following the removal of fuel subsidies in 2023, which led to soaring transportation and production costs. Consequently, food inflation peaked at 21.87% year-on-year in August 2025.

However, the country recently experienced a notable shift.  Food inflation dropped to 16.87% in September 2025, marking the first month-on-month food deflation since February 2012. Market prices for staples like rice, tomatoes, and garri have recorded substantial price reductions (e.g., a 50kg bag of rice fell from ₦100,000 to ₦55,000–₦63,000).

Why is the government hoarding food while the people go hungry?. This is propaganda – ADC

The ADC’s statement, signed by National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, challenges the government’s narrative that this relief is due to sound economic policies and increased domestic output. Instead, the ADC claims the drop is driven by import waivers that have flooded the market with cheap foreign food, a measure the party warns will “sabotage local farmers.”

The government maintains that its policies are responsible for leading to increased domestic production, and the reduction of the price of food commodities and is not politically motivated .
