Members of the Dwarfs Association of Nigeria gathered in Lagos on Friday, October 25, to observe World Dwarfism Day, joining the global community to promote understanding of the condition.

The gathering, themed “Supporting All of Us for Each of Us,” aimed to promote awareness, challenge stereotypes, and advocate for greater inclusion of people with dwarfism in society.

World Dwarfism Day is observed globally on October 25 to honor the birthday of American actor and activist Billy Barty, who founded the organization Little People of America in 1957.

The event in Nigeria is part of an international movement to raise public understanding of the condition, which affects people who are typically 4 feet 10 inches tall or less.

Dwarfism is a medical condition often associated with skeletal or developmental issues, such as the most common form, Achondroplasia. It is a condition with over 200 types, affecting approximately 1 in 25,000 births, and often involves medical challenges like arthritis or spinal issues.
‎ It is found that an estimated 80% of individuals with dwarfism are born to average-height parents.

The celebration seeks to address the persistent challenges faced by people with dwarfism, which include societal discrimination, public staring, and physical barriers due to environments not designed for their needs
