Notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has released more than 100 hostages in Zamfara State, a fresh effort to broker a peace agreement. The release of the captives, which included women and children, follows a dialogue process put together by community leaders under the North West Operation Safe Corridor.

Northern Nigeria, particularly the Northwest, faces a profound security crisis by armed bandits who carry out large-scale kidnappings for ransom, targeting rural communities and travelers. This humanitarian crisis has severely displaced populations and disrupted agricultural production.

The engagement of the state with these non states actors through peace deals is a controversial tactic that has seen mixed results.

This trend coincides with reports that at least twelve local government areas in Katsina State have also entered into local peace agreements to mitigate the persistent attacks and abductions by bandits. The core dilemma of this trend is the fear of balancing the immediate security of citizens with the risk of legitimizing criminal power.

‎Proponents of the peace deal, primarily community leaders and victims, justify the negotiations by arguing that the approach is necessary to secure the lives of hostages and prevent further attacks, particularly when they feel security agencies cannot provide immediate protection.

‎However, security experts warned against the practice, stressing that peace deals with bandits often resulting in empowering them to carry out further attacks, because the resources exchanged can be used to purchase advanced weaponry.
