A fuel tanker explosion has killed at least 35 people and injured 46 others in Niger State. The disaster occurred near the Essan and Badeggi communities along the Bida-Agaie road when a petrol-laden tanker overturned and subsequently exploded. The high casualty count resulted from residents rushing to the scene to scoop spilled fuel moments before the detonation.
The incident took place around 11 a.m. on Tuesday in the Katcha Local Government Area, where a tanker, transporting petroleum products from Lagos to the northern region, crashed, spilling its contents. This highway, a major artery for transporting fuel across Nigeria, is known for frequent and fatal accidents, which are often compounded by poor road conditions.
The practice of residents attempting to siphon fuel from fallen tankers is a recurring and deadly issue, driven by the economic hardship and the high value of fuel in the country.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that in 2020 alone, 1,531 petrol tanker crashes resulted in over 500 fatalities.
The FRSC Commander, Aishatu Sa’adu, warned against the act, stating that people should avoid greed and be content with what God has given them.
However, local residents and transport bodies blame the government for contributing to these incidents.
The Niger State Tanker Drivers Association blamed the dilapidated infrastructure, claiming that the poor road condition caused the initial crash and is responsible for numerous recent accidents.
Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has offered his condolences, describing the incident as “worrisome, unfortunate, and pathetic”.
While the injured receive treatment at medical facilities like the Federal Medical Centre in Bida, pressure is on the state and federal governments to address the threats of highway infrastructure decay and the underlying economic conditions that force residents to risk their lives for fuel.
