The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed that Mathematics remains a compulsory subject for all students sitting for O-Level examinations. This was clarified in a statement by Boriowo Folashade, spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Education, on Sunday.
The statement follows earlier announcements suggesting that senior secondary school students in arts and humanities would no longer need a credit pass in Mathematics for tertiary admissions. The Ministry now emphasizes that while some tertiary programmes may waive the credit in Mathematics as an admission requirement, all candidates must still register and take the subject in their SSCE exams.
This adjustment affects only admission criteria, not the requirement to take these subjects. English and Mathematics remain vital tools for communication, reasoning, and lifelong learning – She said
Critics previously warned the shift could undermine academic rigor and encourage complacency among students.
The Ministry urges stakeholders to rely on official communications for accurate updates.
The Ministry plans engagement with educators and stakeholders to monitor the impact of the policy.
