The convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore, has called on the Federal Capital Territory Police Commissioner, CP Miller Dantawaye, to respect protesters’ constitutional rights and protect participants of Monday’s planned #FreeNnamdiKanuNow march in Abuja.
The protest aims to press for the release of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, detained since June 2021 on charges including terrorism and treasonable felony. Despite court orders for his release, the Federal Government has not complied, fueling public unrest.
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed police presence and strict enforcement of court orders to maintain law and order during the protest.
Sowore urged the police not to use excessive force or make unlawful arrests, warning that the Nigerian people will hold accountable any officer involved in brutality.
Nnamdi Kanu was first arrested in 2015, granted bail in 2017, but fled after a military raid on his home in Abia State. His continued detention remains a contentious issue in Nigeria.
