The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticised former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for his birthday celebrations in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, describing them as “political showmanship” aimed at gaining votes ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Wike made this statement on Thursday while inaugurating newly constructed roads in Abuja. He recounted that the former Anambra governor did not visit IDP camps during his tenure but now chooses such venues for personal celebrations.

‎You can’t become president of Nigeria just by going to IDP camps for birthday celebrations. Who is interested in that?
‎ Celebrating your birthday in an IDP camp doesn’t mean you love Nigeria or that you’re committed to change – Wike

The minister accused Obi of using humanitarian gestures and also politicising social issues for political gain.

This statement by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, Nyesom Wike, came after Obi’s recent visit to LEA Primary School in Kapwa, Abuja, where he criticised the FCT administration for neglecting public schools. Obi called the poor state of educational facilities a “national disgrace” and pledged to alter Nigeria’s course if elected president in 2027. Wike rejected these claims, emphasising that his administration has only been in office for two years and is actively working on school improvements.

If I were you, I’d keep quiet. Enough is enough. The FCT administration is working, and we will continue to work. But we will not tolerate propaganda disguised as compassion – Wike

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister Nyesom ‎‎Wike promised that FCT interventions in education would soon yield tangible results, challenging Obi’s narrative. Obi has yet to reply publicly to Wike’s accusations, at the time this report was published.
