Raila Odinga, Kenya’s veteran opposition leader and former Prime Minister, died at age 80 while undergoing medical treatment in Kerala, India, officials confirmed on Wednesday. He suffered a fatal heart attack near his hotel in Kochi.
Odinga was rushed to Devamatha Hospital in Kochi after collapsing during a morning walk but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Accompanied by close family and security personnel, the news shocked supporters and political circles both in Kenya and internationally. Widely regarded as one of Kenya’s most influential post-independence political figures, Odinga led five presidential campaigns from 1997 to 2022 but never secured the presidency.
He nonetheless remained a key symbol of democratic struggle and reform in Kenya. As Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, he helped steer the country through a coalition government following the disputed 2007 elections that resulted in serious violence. His death leaves a significant leadership gap ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Supporters gathered in Nairobi outside his family home in the Karen district, mourning the loss of “Baba,” a nickname used for him across Kenya. President William Ruto visited the residence to offer condolences.
Funeral arrangements are expected soon, coordinated by the Odinga family and the Kenyan government.
