The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise at the ward level across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) until Sunday, October 12, 2025, to allow more residents to register before the upcoming elections.
INEC made this announcement following its Third Quarterly Meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners on Tuesday, where electoral activities were reviewed.
The registration, which was originally scheduled to end on October 8, started on September 5, 2025. As of October 7, over 55,000 new voters have been registered in the FCT, including both online pre-registrations and completed physical registrations.
The extension aims to accommodate more people who have not registered their voters card, to engage in the ongoing civic engagement in the FCT Area Council elections scheduled for February 21, 2026. The area council elections will fill 68 positions, including six chairmanship and 62 councillorship seats across the six area councils: Abuja Municipal, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Kwali, and Abaji.
INEC also confirmed that the online pre-registration option remains suspended in the FCT to ensure that all pre-registrants complete their registration in person, a measure designed to guarantee the validity of records under the Electoral Act 2022.
This extension is a critical step in promoting an inclusive electoral process, ensuring that voter registration is accessible and valid ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming local elections.
