Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has mobilized civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) fighters and Nigerian troops to Kirawa, Gwoza Local Government Area, following the withdrawal of Cameroonian soldiers, which led to a Boko Haram attack that killed residents and destroyed property.
The withdrawal of Cameroonian troops from Kirawa created a security gap exploited by Boko Haram insurgents. The terrorists invaded the border town, killing two residents and burning 50 houses, heavy-duty equipment, and eight vehicles. The town had been resettled about seven years ago with support from Cameroonian forces, but this recent attack displaced residents once more.
During an assessment visit, Governor Zulum recalled repeatedly warning the Nigerian military of the risks of leaving Kirawa undefended, stressing the importance of border communities like Wilgo, Baga, and Damasak.
Zulum confirmed a meeting with the Nigerian Army Theatre Commander and the Commander of the Multinational Task Force, agreeing on the deployment of Nigerian soldiers to Kirawa to restore security.
He also pledged to support civilian JTF and vigilante groups with equipment to protect the town, alongside exploring modern technological tools to combat insecurity in the region.
The governor appealed to the federal government and military leadership to release funds and procure necessary equipment, especially with the rainy season ending, ensuring continuous operations.
