A group of 148 Nigerian nationals arrived safely in Kano on Friday afternoon after being evacuated from conflict-torn Sudan.
The returnees were welcomed by the Kano branch of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport around 2:30 p.m., their journey made possible by a chartered flight operated by Tarco Aviation, NEMA confirmed in a statement on Saturday.
This group was made up of 25 men, 27 women, along with 39 boys and 57 girls. Upon touching down, they were taken to the Chila Hotel for assessment and registration by various agencies involved in the process.
The agency confirmed that the migrants were not enrolled in any formal reintegration scheme. Instead, after the profiling was completed, they were discharged and provided with transportation funds through ATM cards to support their immediate needs. NEMA described the return procedure as seamless and well-executed, emphasizing the collaboration among all parties involved.
This repatriation coincides with the current crisis in Sudan, which has triggered mass displacement of civilians and economic hardship.
NEMA so far, has been working closely with international bodies to tackle challenges faced by Nigerians living abroad under difficult circumstances. Meanwhile, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has played a crucial role in rescuing Nigerian women caught in trafficking camps in Libya.
