Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, stated that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara is under no legal obligation to promptly resume office after the conclusion of the six-month emergency administration imposed by President Bola Tinubu.
The federal government initiated the emergency administration amid a deep political rift between Governor Fubara and supporters of former governor Wike, who is also Fubara’s estranged political patron. During this period, the governor, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the state House of Assembly members were suspended. Vice-Admiral Ibot Ekwe Ibas was appointed as the sole administrator of Rivers State, a decision met with sharp criticism from various quarters.
On Wednesday, President Tinubu announced the termination of the emergency governance at midnight, citing feedback from the state that extending it was unnecessary. The president directed Fubara, his deputy, and the lawmakers to reoccupy their positions. Despite the lawmakers holding a plenary session, neither Fubara nor his deputy were publicly visible.
In an interview with Channels Television on Thursday, Wike downplayed concerns over the governor’s absence. He explained that leadership responsibilities are not solely dependent on physical presence at the office. According to Wike, the timing and manner of resuming official duties rest entirely with the governor.
I am neither his Chief Security Officer nor his protocol aide. No law requires him to start work immediately. Being sworn in today doesn’t imply an automatic return to the office tomorrow. One cannot assume knowledge of his schedule or whereabouts. Governing doesn’t necessarily mean sitting at a desk – Wike
Wike also confirmed that peace has been restored in Rivers State and that political players are now aligned towards ensuring stability.
