At least 58 fatalities and 258 new infections have been linked to the recent cholera surge affecting 14 out of Bauchi State’s 20 local government areas. State officials have launched a coordinated campaign to contain the illness.
Bauchi State’s Deputy Governor, Auwal Mohammed Jatau, announced the establishment of two committees tasked with managing the escalating cholera crisis. Speaking at their inauguration, he lamented the toll the disease continues to exact on communities and health services.
The deputy governor stressed that these recurring outbreaks are largely preventable through prompt actions, synchronized efforts, and enhancements in water and sanitation. He added that despite interventions, the state is facing 258 fresh cases and 58 deaths.
Meanwhile, the newly formed Cholera Steering and Technical Working committees are charged with coordinating the state’s comprehensive response. The health programs by these newly formed committees align with national public health directives and the objectives of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).
The deputy governor stated that this body will act as the hub for all cholera-related activities, by spearheading long-term prevention plans and rapid action protocols. He emphasized the importance of members’ expertise and commitment to ensuring vigilance, early case detection, and swift containment.
Health experts and community leaders on the other side are mobilizing resources, creating awareness campaigns aiming to mitigate the widespread of the disease and also put to an end the challenges in sanitation infrastructure.
Officials urge the public to adhere to hygiene best practices and report symptoms early.
