The Department of State Services (DSS), yesterday, instituted a five-count legal complaint against former presidential aspirant Omoyele Sowore along with social media platforms X Corp and Meta before a Federal High Court in Abuja. This legal suit followed Sowore’s refusal to remove several contentious posts concerning President Bola Ahmad Tinubu.
The Federal Ministry of Justice, through M.B. Abubakar, Director of Public Prosecutions, alongside a team of DSS legal representatives, presented charges accusing Sowore of disseminating false content designed to disrupt public order. The accusations comes from posts made by Sowore on his official X and Facebook accounts in late August 2025, in which he branded President Tinubu a “criminal” and challenged claims regarding corruption eradication under his government.
Each allegation outlines Sowore’s supposed intent to provoke unrest amid divergent political opinions by circulating misleading messages. The complaint also implicates the social media entities for facilitating the distribution of these posts. In response, the DSS demanded the shutdown of Sowore’s X account after labeling the publications defamatory.
The State Security Service alleges that calling the President a criminal constitutes novel offences. I will attend court sessions as required and continue advocating for reform – Sowore
Despite the summons, Sowore has vowed to engage fully with the court process, criticizing the charges as fabricated attempts to silence political dissent. He reaffirmed his readiness to attend all hearings scheduled for the case.
