The Lagos State Safety Commission has ordered a cessation of work on a six-storey structure at 28 Saka Tinubu Street, Victoria Island, after identifying multiple breaches of safety regulations that threaten lives and neighboring properties. This action follows complaints from local residents and investigative reports.

Residents around the building site raised alarms about construction activities causing damage to adjacent homes and vehicles, with falling debris endangering pedestrians. They described incidents of boulders and wooden planks detaching from the structure, resulting in harm to walls, windows, and cars within nearby compounds.

In response, the Safety Commission carried out a thorough inspection of the property on September 11, confirming that previous warnings had gone unheeded. Although the contractors were originally served a compliance notice, they failed to address the safety violations or report back to the commission as required.

Project Engineer Otunba Ayeni claimed the project was complete. However, safety officials disputed this, stating that crucial safety measures and permits had not been obtained prior to construction, further violating established procedures. An official moratorium of 48 hours was subsequently issued, compelling the contractors to halt work and report to the commission.

Sources from the community revealed that the property belongs to a prominent traditional ruler in the South-West region, though the identity remains confidential.

Authorities have revealed plans to increase monitoring of construction sites to prevent future risks. The Safety Commission awaits full compliance from the developers as investigations continue.
