The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared this Friday as a national holiday to honour Eid-ul-Mawlid, the celebration of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). The announcement was made on Wednesday in Abuja by the Ministry of Interior.

Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, conveyed the decision through a statement issued by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary. The declaration invites Nigerians to observe the day dedicated to reflecting on the timeless values of peace, love, humility, tolerance, and compassion illustrated by the Prophet’s life.

Tunji-Ojo extended warm wishes to Muslims within the nation and worldwide, encouraging them to use this occasion to deepen their commitment to unity and societal progress. The minister hopes the Eid-ul-Mawlid festivities will inspire harmony and reinforce efforts towards national development.

Eid-ul-Mawlid, which falls in the third Islamic month of Rabi’ al-Awwal, is celebrated with a range of traditional activities, including prayers, educational talks, vibrant processions, and charitable deeds.

Across Nigeria, this day is officially recognized as a public holiday. It serves not just as a religious landmark but also as a moment for leaders from both religious and political spheres to appeal for peace and cohesion amid current security and economic challenges faced by the country.
