A gathering aimed at addressing growing insecurity in Katsina State was abruptly interrupted on Tuesday by a group of men and youths believed to be political thugs.
The assembly, convened by the Katsina Security Community Initiative, sought practical solutions to the persistent bandit attacks devastating local communities. Katsina has witnessed severe losses from these assaults, with numerous fatalities and destruction of properties worth billions of naira.
While Governor Dikko Umar Radda led a delegation to meet President Bola Ahmed Tinubu behind closed doors for federal support, the local forum faced immediate chaos shortly after it commenced. Experts from various sectors, including retired military and police officials, academics, and community leaders, had assembled to deliberate the crisis.
As convener Dr. Bashir Kurfi began outlining the security challenges, including shutdowns of several local government areas, disruption of economic activities like farming and animal husbandry, and closure or occupation of schools by bandits, one of the attendees rose to object. The man accused the organisers of discrediting the current administration and accused them of neglect during the past government. This interruption quickly escalated as others joined in, resulting in physical attacks on attendees and journalists.
Reportedly, some of the agitators were armed and stationed both inside and outside the venue, threatening harm to anyone deemed antagonistic to the governor. Despite the turmoil, Dr. Kurfi reaffirmed that the effort to find solutions would continue unabated. He alleged that the disruption was orchestrated by government affiliates aiming to stifle honest discourse.
The meeting had previously been held in Abuja and Kaduna with government representatives present, and local government chairmen actively involved, which was surprising to the convener at the unfolding hostility.
State officials were either unaware or unavailable for comment on the incident. Meanwhile, in Abuja, President Tinubu has instructed security agencies to intensify their strategies in Katsina, including deploying additional air drones and repositioning troops along boundary areas to combat banditry aggressively.
The President acknowledged the country’s border security weaknesses, during a meeting with Governor Radda and other stakeholders and promised to escalate ground troop operations and consider establishing state police forces to bolster local security efforts. Governor Radda credited President Tinubu’s openness and consistent backing for Katsina’s requests.
The Emir of Katsina’s representative also appealed for enhanced cooperation among security agencies and increased policing presence, stressing the state’s investment in security amid limited resources.
The recent disruptions at the community meeting shows the urgency of these challenges and the determination required to overcome them. There is cautious hope for stability to return, with reinforced security measures underway and ongoing dialogues.
