Kemi Badenoch, leader of the UK Conservative Party, has openly confronted ongoing racial and ethnic criticisms aimed at her, dismissing claims that her achievements are tied to diversity policies rather than merit.
The party head labeled personal attacks against her as excessive and driven by prejudice.
Since stepping into her leadership role, Badenoch has faced persistent disparagement that questions her legitimacy, often attributing her success to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts. In a recent interview, she described these allegations as unfounded and symptomatic of a wider, racially charged backlash. The campaign against her, she noted, extends beyond political opponents to include anonymous online voices who propagate ethnic stereotypes and cast doubt on her capabilities.
Badenoch emphasized that the critiques frequently revert to tired prejudices, suggesting she could not have succeeded through her own efforts alone. She coined the term “Kemi derangement syndrome” to describe the irrational fixation some have with undermining her leadership. Despite this, she said that only a handful of MPs actively engage in these attacks, with much of the vitriol emanating from social media platforms.
The Conservative leader also condemned efforts by her rivals to destabilize her tenure, particularly those backing Robert Jenrick, her opponent in the last leadership contest. She dismissed these challenges as distractions driven by sour grapes rather than genuine political concern.
There’s a certain cadre of people who clearly can’t cope with the fact that I won this and I’m doing it. The level of personal attacks from anonymous people is hysterical…people used to talk about Trump derangement syndrome. I think there’s a Kemi derangement syndrome. How could she possibly have done this? It must have been DEI…they will try and use the tropes about black people, that they’re lazy, they’re corrupt or they’re all DEI hires and it’s something which I find extraordinary
Badenoch remains resolute and determined, as she navigates both internal party challenges and external scrutiny. She stressed that the road ahead will be tough yet steady, aiming to regain voter confidence with genuine plans rather than reactive promises.
