The Arewa Progressive Vanguard (APV), a prominent socio-political network representing Northern Nigeria and its diaspora, has appealed for restraint following increasing criticism of Mr. Adedapo Segun, Chief Financial Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

The group urged stakeholders to avoid divisive attacks and ethnic discord.

Mr. Segun, who took on the financial helm of NNPCL in November 2024, has recently come under fire from various quarters, including lawsuits and questions surrounding his omission from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) ongoing examination of alleged fund mismanagement at the Port Harcourt refinery. These developments have caused heated debates, with some accusing the EFCC of bias based on Mr. Segun’s Yoruba heritage.

Responding to these claims, the APV delivered a strong message in a statement released Thursday under the signature of its Global President, Alhaji Idris Musa. The organization dismissed calls for Mr. Segun’s resignation as unfounded and warned such rhetoric risks inflaming ethnic tensions in an already fragile national environment.

The group emphasized the critical nature of the NNPCL as a strategic national entity, stressing the need for a stable leadership atmosphere.

The role of CFO demands focus and tranquility to ensure effective performance. We recognize the sensitivity of this position and advocate for a supportive environment free from distractions

Alhaji Musa criticized allegations insinuating selective investigations by the EFCC, calling them shortsighted and inflammatory.

Corruption transcends ethnic and regional boundaries. The EFCC is a competent institution that requires no validation from any faction to perform its duties. Should Mr. Segun be culpable, appropriate action will follow

The APV further called on all parties to cease inflaming ethnic divides and to allow official agencies to conduct their inquiries unhindered. The organization cautioned against social media condemnations and unverified accusations that threaten national unity.

We cannot afford to rekindle past conflicts. Patience and trust in investigative bodies are vital for safeguarding Nigeria’s economic and institutional integrity – The group stressed.

While affirming that no one is above the law, the APV insisted that individuals and factions should not be exploited as pawns for blackmail or sabotage.

We have witnessed unfounded claims accusing the EFCC of ethnic bias simply because Mr. Segun is Yoruba. Such statements are not only irresponsible but also dangerous at this delicate juncture…institutions like the NNPCL play a vital role in our country’s development, and their leadership must be protected from undue distractions. Let investigations follow their course without fear or favour – Alhaji Idris Musa, APV Global President.

The Arewa Progressive Vanguard (APV), urged Nigerians to focus on constructive engagement rather than fueling discord amid the ongoing investigation.
