The Nigerian Navy has disclosed plans to establish a naval base in Yauri, a riverine town in Kebbi State, as part of efforts to enhance maritime security in the country’s inland waterways.

This strategic move is aimed at countering rising security threats linked to criminal activities along the River Niger corridor.

A delegation from the office of the Chief of Naval Staff, led by Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu, made the announcement during a courtesy visit to Governor Nasir Idris at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi. Nwatu explained that the planned base forms part of a broader maritime security initiative spearheaded by the Navy.

He emphasized the dual role of the River Niger—both as a source of livelihood and as a security concern. “River Niger is a national treasure, supporting agriculture and power generation. Unfortunately, it has also become a conduit for arms smuggling and criminal operations due to insurgency and conflict,” he said.

Rear Admiral Nwatu noted that while the Navy already has a presence on the Niger State side of the river, the need for a complementary base in Kebbi became necessary to ensure full surveillance and control. “Establishing a base in Yauri will strengthen our presence and close the security gap along this key waterway,” he stated.

He expressed confidence that the new base would help bolster the country’s internal security, particularly in the Northwestern region, where banditry and cross-border crimes have intensified in recent years.

Governor Idris welcomed the move, describing it as a significant step toward addressing the complex security issues affecting southern Kebbi. He acknowledged the persistent threat of armed groups and smuggling rings exploiting the riverine terrain.

“We thank God for the progress so far in fighting insecurity. The establishment of a naval base in Yauri will further fortify our borders and waterways,” the governor remarked. He highlighted the strategic importance of Kebbi, which shares borders with both Niger and Benin Republics.

The governor also mentioned the rising insecurity in neighboring countries, noting that Benin and Niger, once considered stable, are now contending with increased threats, which makes the Nigerian Navy’s intervention even more timely.

Governor Idris pledged full support from the state government, including the provision of temporary facilities to ensure the base can begin operations while awaiting permanent infrastructure. “We are ready to provide everything necessary to make this initiative a success,” he assured.

The naval base in Yauri is expected to not only enhance the Navy’s inland operations but also complement existing security mechanisms in a region that has seen escalating transnational criminal activity in recent years.
