The World Igbo Congress (WIC) has announced plans to launch the Igbo Federal Credit Union Bank during its 2025 annual convention, to be held from August 29 to 31 at the Marriott Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts.

The initiative is aimed at boosting economic empowerment among Igbos in the diaspora and revitalising traditional business practices rooted in communal support.

Chairman of the WIC Board of Directors, Dr. Festus Okere, revealed the development, noting that the proposed credit union is designed to mirror the success of the Igbo apprenticeship system, which played a major role in reviving the eastern Nigerian economy after the civil war. “This project has the potential to transform the landscape of Igbo-owned businesses abroad and reconnect us with time-tested economic strategies,” he said.

Okere added that the launch of the credit bank will mark a turning point for Igbo financial autonomy and serve as a model for self-reliance. He encouraged community members and dignitaries to begin travel and accommodation arrangements early due to the high level of interest and projected attendance at the event.

According to him, the 2025 convention could become the most attended in WIC’s history, owing to increased concern over political and economic conditions both in Nigeria and within diaspora communities. “This convention is not just a gathering—it’s a movement towards economic independence,” he emphasized.

Among those scheduled to attend are prominent personalities such as Chief Gaius Chibueze (a.k.a. E-Money), Chairman of Faith Toyota; Chief Valentine Igbobi, PCNI Chairman and Ochiagha of Ndiigbo in New England; and a representative from the Boston city government. Igbobi has also approved full representation from the People’s Club of Nigeria (Boston branch), while the Umuada Igbo will attend in strong numbers.

WIC Vice Chairman Hon. Basil Onwukwe confirmed that the convention will be North America’s largest assembly of influential Igbo figures. He stressed that only political office holders with integrity and a proven commitment to the safety and welfare of Ndi Igbo would be invited. “We will carefully screen attendees to ensure only those who truly serve our people are welcomed,” he stated.

As anticipation builds, the WIC leadership views the launch of the Igbo Federal Credit Union Bank as a legacy-defining project, one that could redefine how the diaspora supports economic growth and unity among Igbos worldwide.
