The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will commence a fresh round of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) across Nigeria beginning August 18, 2025, in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
This move is aimed at updating the national voter database and ensuring inclusivity for eligible Nigerians.
Speaking in Makurdi, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Benue State, Prof. Sam Egwu, revealed that the registration will begin with an online pre-registration phase via the official INEC website. This will be followed by physical registration at INEC area offices and designated centres from August 25, 2025. According to him, these centres will operate from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Prof. Egwu emphasized that the registration exercise is in accordance with constitutional provisions and is designed to accommodate new voters who have turned 18 since the 2023 general elections. “It also covers those who couldn’t register earlier due to being abroad, imprisoned, or previously disinterested,” he noted.
The REC added that the process would also address other voter needs such as replacing lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), making corrections to voter details, and transferring voting locations either within or across states and wards.
He issued a stern warning against financial inducement during the registration process, stressing that the CVR is free of charge. “No Nigerian should pay or offer anything to be registered. It is a civic duty and a right that must not be monetized,” Egwu warned. He encouraged early participation to avoid the usual congestion and difficulties experienced toward the end of the exercise.
Prof. Egwu also assured that arrangements are in place to ensure Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are not left out of the process.
While the commencement date is fixed, he said the commission will later announce a closing date, giving INEC time to consolidate and process the data for proper voter roll management.
