The United States government has implemented a major change to its visa policy for Nigerians, announcing that most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will now be limited to a single entry and valid for only three months.

This updated policy, released by the US Embassy in Abuja on Tuesday, took effect immediately.

According to the embassy’s statement, visas that were granted prior to July 8, 2025, will not be affected by the new rules. “All non-immigrant visas issued before July 8, 2025, remain valid under the terms they were issued,” the embassy clarified, indicating that previously issued multiple-entry visas would still be honored.

The decision was made under the US Department of State’s global visa reciprocity framework, which aims to align US visa policies with those of other nations. The embassy described the framework as “a continuous process subject to review and change at any time,” which may involve altering the number of entries or duration of stay granted under a visa.

The United States justified the policy adjustment by pointing to the need to uphold the integrity of its immigration system. “US visa criteria and standards are designed to protect the integrity of US immigration systems,” the embassy noted, adding that the standards follow international security and technical guidelines.

Efforts are underway between the two governments to bridge existing gaps. The US Mission stated, “The US Mission is working with the Government of Nigeria to ensure that Nigeria can meet the criteria.” These criteria include secure passport issuance, monitoring visa overstays, and sharing criminal or security information.

Despite the tightened restrictions, the embassy underscored that diplomatic ties between the two countries remain firm. “The United States values its longstanding relationship with Nigeria and remains committed to expanding our partnership based on mutual respect, shared security priorities, and economic opportunity,” the statement read.

Nigerians were urged to comply with the new visa rules and maintain proper documentation. The embassy reiterated its ongoing support for reforms within Nigerian immigration and pledged continued collaboration. “We look forward to continued cooperation at all levels with the Nigerian public and government officials to ensure safe and lawful travel between the United States and all countries,” it concluded.
