U.S. President Donald Trump announced Sunday a 10% tariff on countries aligning with BRICS’ “anti-American policies,” targeting the 11-nation bloc, including Brazil, Russia, India, and China.
The statement, posted on Trump’s Truth Social platform, did not specify what constitutes “anti-American policies.” The tariff threat coincides with the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, where leaders criticized U.S. trade policies.
BRICS, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and newer members like Egypt and Iran, represents nearly half the world’s population. The group condemned Trump’s tariffs as harmful to global trade.
Trump’s announcement follows a U.S. tariff plan set for August 1, delayed from July 9, for countries without trade deals. Only the UK and Vietnam have secured agreements so far.
The BRICS summit also addressed geopolitical issues, condemning U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran and expressing concern over Gaza, while avoiding criticism of Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
