Paul Pogba has signed a two-year contract with AS Monaco, marking a significant step in his return to professional football after nearly two years away from the game.

The Ligue 1 club confirmed the signing on Saturday, reintroducing the 32-year-old World Cup winner to top-flight competition. Pogba, who has battled a series of setbacks, including long-term injuries and disciplinary issues, will be playing in the French top division for the first time in his senior career.

The French international had seen limited action over the past three seasons—just 12 appearances—due to recurring injuries, an 18-month suspension for a failed drugs test, and complications from an extortion case involving his own brother. He tested positive for a banned substance following a Juventus match in August 2023. Although eligible to play again since March, his contract with the Italian club had already been terminated by then.

Speaking to French television, Pogba shared his renewed motivation: “I am determined to get back on the pitch, mentally ready, physically ready, it’s just a matter of time.” His move to Monaco signals a fresh chapter for the midfielder, whose career once sparkled with promise and accolades, including a starring role in France’s 2018 World Cup triumph.

Pogba’s career trajectory began in Le Havre’s youth academy before his high-profile transfers took him to Manchester United and then Juventus, where he won four Serie A titles. A world-record €105 million return to Manchester United in 2016 added to his fame, but injuries and inconsistency marred his second stint in England. His return to Juventus three years ago also failed to reignite his form.

Now joining a Monaco side set to compete in next season’s UEFA Champions League after finishing third in Ligue 1, Pogba has an opportunity to revive his career on the European stage. With 91 caps and 11 goals for the French national team, including a goal in the 2018 World Cup final, Pogba’s experience could prove invaluable for the principality club aiming to reestablish itself among Europe’s elite.
