On Wednesday, Chief Judge Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu urged lawyers to prioritize human rights over tradition, addressing chieftaincy disputes and religious freedom at the Nigerian Bar Association’s memorial lecture.

Speaking at the 5th Kehinde Sofola memorial lecture organized by the NBA Sagamu Branch, Dipeolu, represented by Justice Adetokunbo Jibodu, emphasized balancing the 2021 Obas and Chiefs Law with constitutional rights. The lecture honored the late Attorney General, known for his dedication to justice.

Dipeolu highlighted that the Obas and Chiefs Law regulates traditional rulership but noted persistent chieftaincy disputes and challenges to religious freedom. She urged lawyers to resolve conflicts while safeguarding constitutional freedoms, fostering peace and unity in Ogun State.

Justice Phillips Akinside, delivering the keynote, addressed controversies over coronet obas and stressed that traditional rulers must adhere to customs during installation and burial, as mandated by law. He emphasized preserving African traditions without violating rights.

NBA Sagamu Chairman David Efuwape said the lecture aimed to deepen understanding of the 2021 law, potentially guiding its review. The event, attended by dignitaries like the Akarigbo of Remo, underscored Sofola’s legacy in promoting justice and equity.
