Liverpool are on the verge of signing Hungary international Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, as the 21-year-old left-back prepares to join the Premier League champions after two impressive seasons at the Vitality Stadium.
Bournemouth have already moved to secure his replacement, bringing in Adrien Truffert from Rennes. Kerkez’s switch comes as Liverpool continue to bolster their squad, with a club-record £116 million deal for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz also nearing completion.
Kerkez’s rise has been swift since leaving Hungary for bigger European leagues. Born in Serbia, he started his professional career at Gyor before earning a move to AC Milan. However, he didn’t feature for the Italian giants and instead made his mark at AZ Alkmaar, where he contributed five goals and seven assists across 52 games in the 2022-23 campaign, helping them to a fourth-place Eredivisie finish and a Europa Conference League semi-final.
The defender moved to Bournemouth in 2023, a deal influenced by Liverpool’s current sporting director Richard Hughes, who was with the Cherries at the time. Kerkez enjoyed a standout debut Premier League season, playing every league match as Bournemouth secured a record 56 points and a ninth-place finish. He chipped in with two goals and six assists, drawing attention from top clubs.
At Anfield, Kerkez will reunite with Hungary teammate Dominik Szoboszlai, further strengthening the Hungarian presence at the club. His arrival is expected to spark competition for the left-back spot, casting uncertainty over the futures of Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas. Robertson, now 31, has been linked with Atletico Madrid as he weighs up his options for regular first-team football.
Liverpool are reportedly eager to keep Robertson but may allow Tsimikas to move on if a suitable offer arrives. “We want to build depth in every position, and Milos is a player we’ve admired for some time,” a club source revealed. The Reds also recently added right-back Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen for £29.5 million, further highlighting their intent to strengthen both flanks.
With multiple high-profile signings close to completion, Liverpool’s summer business signals a determined effort to stay ahead of their rivals. The Kerkez deal underlines their strategy of investing in young, dynamic talent as they prepare to defend their Premier League crown in the upcoming season.
