The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was on Tuesday bestowed with the chieftaincy title of “Ugosimba 1 of Enugu”—translated as “Jewel/Eagle from another kingdom”—by the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council.
The honour was conferred during her two-day working visit to the state, underscoring her contributions to national development and her connection with the people of Enugu.
The conferment ceremony took place in Enugu with traditional rulers, dignitaries, and state officials in attendance. Chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, HRM Igwe Ikechukwu Asadu, led the conferment, praising the First Lady’s public service and philanthropic work. “Nobody could say you were silent at the parliament,” he said, referencing her three-term tenure in the Senate. “We are thanking you for what you do for the midwives, for nurses… feeding the hungry. So, we are here to recognise and appreciate all these good works you are doing.”
Visibly moved by the recognition, Mrs. Tinubu expressed deep gratitude to the traditional rulers and people of Enugu for what she described as a heartfelt and spiritual honour. “It is not that I have not been given titles, but this one is quite special and I believe it is God-ordained,” she said, adding that the experience would remain etched in her memory.
The First Lady also extended her appreciation to the people of Enugu for the warm reception and peaceful atmosphere she encountered during her visit. “I love your state; it is such a very peaceful state and a very peaceful ambience,” she said. “This moment will remain special in my heart and I will always remember your people for good and for the honour you have done for me.”
Mrs. Tinubu emphasized that the title was not only a personal recognition but one she shares with her husband, President Bola Tinubu, and their family. “Today is, indeed, a great honour to me personally and also to my family… I know he will be very delighted and I believe the children too will be delighted,” she noted.
The chieftaincy title comes as part of the First Lady’s broader engagement across the country, where she has been advocating for improved healthcare services, particularly for nurses and midwives, and championing initiatives aimed at uplifting vulnerable communities. Her visit to Enugu marked another chapter in that ongoing outreach.
