Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, his office announced.

Former United States President Joe Biden was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer on Friday, May 16, 2025, according to a statement from his personal office released on Sunday, May 18, 2025. The cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5), has metastasized to the bone, indicating a high-risk, advanced stage.

The diagnosis followed Biden’s visit to doctors last week after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms, which led to the discovery of a prostate nodule. The statement noted that while the cancer is aggressive, it appears hormone-sensitive, allowing for effective management through treatments like hormone therapy. Biden, 82, and his family are currently reviewing treatment options with his medical team.

The announcement has drawn widespread attention, with political figures, including President Donald Trump and former Vice President Kamala Harris, expressing support and wishing Biden a speedy recovery. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the U.S., and Biden’s diagnosis has reignited discussions about his health, previously scrutinized during his 2021–2025 presidency.

Biden, who lost his son Beau to brain cancer in 2015, has been a vocal advocate for cancer research through the Cancer Moonshot initiative. He is currently at his home in Wilmington, Delaware, as treatment plans are finalized.
