Bandits killed 15 farmers and injured three in Kebbi’s Waje village, prompting a N24m donation from the state government for victims’ families.
Armed bandits attacked Waje village in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State on Saturday, May 17, 2025, killing 15 farmers and injuring three others.
The assault, confirmed by Kebbi State Police spokesperson CSP Nafiu Abubakar, occurred as farmers were leaving their fields, with attackers on motorcycles wielding sophisticated firearms.
A resident, Malam Abdullahi, reported the bandits stormed the village at night, shooting indiscriminately. While police initially reported 10 deaths, Kebbi Deputy Governor Umar Tafida, visiting the community on behalf of Governor Nasir Idris, confirmed 15 fatalities. Tafida condemned the violence and announced a N24m donation to support victims’ families.
The attack has heightened fears in Kebbi, with locals decrying the lack of security presence in rural areas. Tafida assured residents that the government would strengthen measures to ensure farmers’ safety and prevent further attacks.
The incident, part of rising banditry in Nigeria’s northwest, has renewed calls for urgent action to address insecurity plaguing rural communities.
