The Bida Local Government Council in Niger State has shut down multiple ice cream production facilities operating without statutory licences and National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) registration numbers.
Environmental inspectors sealed the factories located around the Federal Polytechnic Bida area after complaints were received from residents. The council evacuated production equipment after health inspectors discovered flies in the mixtures of the product lacking NAFDAC approval.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the council’s Chief Press Secretary, Aliyu B. Umar, laboratory analysis of the unlabelled products distributed across the metropolis revealed the lack of nutritional value and the presence of substances dangerous to human health.
“During the operation, the inspection team discovered serious hygiene concerns, including flies in the mixture used for ice cream production. The products were also found to be without labels, making it difficult to identify their contents and trace their source.”
Speaking during the enforcement operation, the Supervisory Councillor for Health and Social Welfare, Ahmed Danladi, reiterated the council’s commitment to ensuring all consumables sold to residents meet strict regulatory standards.
He warned that the Council Chairman, UM Manko, will take decisive legal action against businesses violating public health and environmental laws.
The council advised residents to report any suspicious food production and distribution activities to the appropriate agencies as investigations are ongoing.
