Lagos State is investigating the recruitment of 89 Katsina labourers at Dangote Refinery, amid NLC allegations of labour law violations.

The Lagos State Government launched an investigation into the employment of 89 labourers from Katsina State at Dangote Refinery in Ibeju-Lekki on Sunday, May 18, 2025. The probe follows a viral video showing the workers arriving, sparking public outcry and concerns over compliance with labour regulations.

Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed the ongoing investigation, noting that security agencies are also involved. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Lagos chapter, led by Funmi Sessi, criticized the recruitment as a breach of labour laws, alleging it sidelined local workers and posed security risks.

The Lagos State Police Command clarified that the 89 men were legitimately hired by a contractor for the refinery, with verified National Identification Numbers and no incriminating items found. Dangote Refinery stated the workers were sourced by a vendor and is investigating the matter.

The controversy has fueled debates over regional employment practices, with the NLC threatening action if the workers are not relocated, while some groups defend the recruitment as lawful.
