The Speaker of the Abaji Area Council Legislative Arm, Abdullahi Baba Yahaya, has distributed cash palliatives to 180 widows to cushion the severe effects of the current economic hardship.
The financial intervention is aimed at providing relief to vulnerable households within the Federal Capital Territory.
During a brief ceremony held at the council’s conference hall, the beneficiaries received the sum of N10,000 each, amounting to a total disbursement of N1.8 million.
The selected widows were drawn from Nuku/Sabon Gari, Central, and South-East wards of the area council. Yahaya, who represents the North-East Ward, explained that the empowerment programme was structured to target those most affected by the economic downturn. He stated that the humanitarian initiative was inspired by the council chairman, Abubakar Umar Abdullahi.
The Speaker commended the executive chairman, stating that he had consistently demonstrated a track record of supporting widows, orphans, and indigent persons long before assuming political office.
The legislative leader also disclosed that official arrangements are underway for the second phase of the empowerment programme, scheduled for November.
He strongly challenged his fellow councillors to replicate the charitable gesture within their respective political wards.
