Aviation stakeholders urge the Federal Government to abandon splitting NCAT and instead convert it into a university to boost Nigeria’s aviation training.

Aviation stakeholders, including the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), have called on the Federal Government to halt plans to split the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) in Zaria. The appeal, made during a stakeholders’ meeting on Sunday, May 11, 2025, proposes converting NCAT into a full-fledged university.

The stakeholders, led by AON President Alhaji Abdulmunaf Yunusa, argued that a university status would enhance NCAT’s capacity to train pilots, engineers, and aviation professionals, aligning with global standards. They criticized the proposed split as counterproductive, citing potential resource strain and weakened training quality.

The recommendation follows concerns raised by NCAT’s rector, Captain Alkali Modibbo, about outdated facilities and staffing shortages. The college, established in 1964, remains Nigeria’s premier aviation training institute but faces infrastructure challenges.

The Federal Government has yet to respond, but stakeholders emphasized that a university conversion could position NCAT as a regional hub for aviation education and innovation.
