Lagos State Government begins demolition of illegal shanties and unapproved structures in Ikeja GRA to enhance security and restore urban planning, following months of notices to property owners.
The Lagos State Government commenced the demolition of illegal shanties and unapproved buildings in Ikeja Government Reserved Area (GRA) on May 10, 2025, to address security concerns and restore urban planning, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) announced.
The operation, led by LASBCA Permanent Secretary Gbolahan Oki, targeted makeshift stalls, wooden shacks, and other unauthorized structures along major streets, including Michael Otedola, Sowemimo, Remi Fani-Kayode, and Ajisafe.
Oki stated that these structures threatened the safety and integrity of the upscale neighborhood, with some allegedly serving as hubs for illicit activities, including the sale of stolen goods.
LASBCA had notified property owners months in advance to present building approvals for verification.
Oki emphasized that the enforcement followed repeated notices and was not abrupt, targeting non-compliant structures to ensure public safety and adherence to state planning regulations.
Residents, who had raised concerns about the area’s deteriorating condition, welcomed the operation.
Dr. Muiz Banire, Chairman of the Ikeja GRA Residents Association, expressed support, stating the demolitions were a necessary step to restore order and enforce the rule of law.
