The Labour Party appointed a 24-member Caretaker Executive Committee to handle its all party activities concerning the upcoming Lagos State Local Government elections, on friday in Ikeja, the state capital.
Seyi Sowunmi, the Federal Representative over Ojo constituency emphasized the committee’s task in fostering unity among members by promoting an inclusive environment to reconcile the factions and individuals within the party. The committee are expected to resume immediately with priority in conducting congresses at the ward, local government, and state levels. As he provided the positions and names of the appointed members, and it to be led by the State Chairman Rotimi Odunaike including Adegboyega Adeniji – Deputy State Chairman, Comrade Rasheed Bamishe – Deputy State Chairman, Barr. Affiong L. Affiong – Deputy State Chairman, Barr. Solomon Agbafor – Deputy State Chairman, Dr. Adefolaseye Adebayo – Deputy State Chairman, Opeyemi Oluwaseun – Deputy State Chairman, Hon. Dorcas Irhoghama Omorodion – State Secretary. The Caretaker Committee including, Barr. Femi Kehinde – State Legal Adviser, Samuel Ajayi Crowther – Auditor, Damilare Akinlere – Youth Leader, Ebije Elliot Chukunalu – Assistant Youth Leader,Justin C. Ijeh – Publicity Secretary, Isiaq Taofeek Kayode – Assistant Youth Leader and Precious Ofulue, Assistant Youth Leader, Femi Ferguson – Organising Secretary. Assistant State Secretaries – Mr. Eze Akpiri Ejotorishede, Comrade Onafowokan Gbenga, State Treasurer – Adesegbe Ehigiator, Financial Secretary – Mr. Oladele Egbayelo, Women Leader – Mrs. Titi Oworu, Deputy Women Leaders – Mrs. Olayemi Aboyewa, Mrs. Ijeoma Okafor and Basirat Owoiya.
Hon. Afam Ogene, Federal Representative representing Ogbaru constituency of Anambra State and a leader in labour party also stated on the current defections in the political space is “nothing to worry about” at the moment. He claimed that majority of those who defected from the party wouldn’t get tickets, as he stated, ” “For anybody who is a student of Nigerian politics, defection is nothing. By the time primaries of the various political parties begin next year, people who are denied tickets in some of the parties they are going to would also look for platforms to run elections. Some of them would run coming back, so we are not bothered. And also, you should know that there are people waiting in the wings to take over positions that have been vacated by people who are defected. It’s all part of the political game.”
The party charged the committee focus on all election preparedness processes, exhibiting roles in administrative and political leadership. The committee was expected to provide political strategies for the elections along with a place for interim leadership.
