Vice President Kashim Shettima on Friday officially commissioned the new Kashim Ibrahim University Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The state government constructed the medical facility to curb medical tourism and expand healthcare access in the North-East.
The 400-bed institution is fully equipped with a 1.5-tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner, a 160-slice computed tomography (CT) scanner, digital mammography equipment, and an oxygen plant complex. It also houses 13 specialist departments, a medical college, a students’ hostel, and a 200-unit staff estate to facilitate joint operations in training and advanced diagnosis.
The hospital will serve residents of neighboring communities across the Lake Chad region. According to the state government, it plans to train medical personnel, in order to address manpower shortages that have constrained healthcare delivery in the state over years of insurgency.
Speaking at the inauguration, Vice President Shettima commended Governor Babagana Zulum for his dedication to rebuilding public infrastructure and impacting the masses.
“We shall be judged by what survives our time in office; the offices we held, the aides who surrounded us, and the length of our convoys will have surrendered their importance. What will endure are the institutions we built, the roads we built and the lives we improved through service. That is the meaning of our gathering here in Maiduguri.”
During his visit to Maiduguri, the Vice President also inaugurated the Yerwa Practice Mega Primary School, built by the Zulum administration. Shettima also commissioned another primary school delivered under the Kashim Shettima Free Education Programme, a school designed for orphans and vulnerable children.
