The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has vowed to launch an investigation into an internet fraud syndicate operating from the nation’s capital.
The suspected fraudsters were recently exposed by an American online scam-baiter and YouTuber, NanoBaiter, for allegedly impersonating prominent content creators to defraud victims seeking financial recovery.
The suspects, operating primarily through Telegram, reportedly lured desperate individuals by selling fake fund-recovery software under the guise of popular influencers like MrBeast and Airrack.
During a month-long digital infiltration, NanoBaiter successfully reversed a remote connection to the computer of the syndicate, gaining access to their webcam, cryptocurrency transactions, and active Wi-Fi identifiers that traced the illicit operation to Abuja.
The YouTuber claimed to have cost one of the primary suspects, identified simply as Kemi, approximately $13,000 by redeeming stolen gift cards live on camera. Evidence gathered during the digital operation has reportedly been submitted to the EFCC for prosecution.
Even without a formal petition in hand, the EFCC is already on the move. The commission’s Head of Media, Dele Oyewale, assured the public that investigations are currently underway. He stated that the agency is working round the clock to protect everyday people from the devastating impact of cybercrime.
“If they have reported the matter to us, as they claim in that video, you can be very sure that we are going to investigate the matter even beyond what they may have uncovered. Whether there is such a report or there is no such report, we are never relenting. Every day we are ensuring that all these cases of cybercrime are brought to their knees.”
Oyewale acknowledged that cybercrime remains a major economic threat with the potential to siphon millions of dollars from unsuspecting victims globally. He stressed that the commission will not fold its arms and dismiss the perpetrators as minor offenders, given the international backlash their actions bring upon Nigeria.
