Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has warned military commanders against the illusion of total victory, warning that Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) continue to pose persistent threats across the North-East region.
Fintiri made this statement on Thursday during the opening of a two-day meeting of federal and state security administrators in Yola. Represented by his deputy, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, the governor acknowledged that while the Nigerian Army have degraded the activities of the terrorists, the non-states actors have successfully adapted by exploiting rural terrains and cross-border vulnerabilities to launch attacks on volatile regions.
He challenged top security strategists to abandon institutional rivalry and bridge the operational disconnect between intelligence-gathering units and field tactical teams to achieve lasting peace.
He urged the Federal Government to scale up surveillance technology and troop welfare to match the tactics of regional terror cells.
“While our gallant armed forces have significantly degraded their conventional capabilities, these insurgents continue to exploit vast rural terrains, asymmetric tactics and cross-border vulnerabilities to strike at soft targets. However, let me speak with political candour: we cannot afford the luxury of premature victory speeches,” the governor stated.
Fintiri urged the Federal Government to deploy surveillance drones and establish one-stop joint border posts to curb arms proliferation. The Adamawa State Government, in order to support local policing units and bring lasting peace across the 21 local government areas of the state, donated 300 motorcycles and 16 operational security vehicles.
