President Bola Tinubu has officially approved the payment of lifetime salaries for retired Comptrollers-General and Deputy Comptrollers-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service.
The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the presidential directive on Friday during the closing ceremony of the Specialised Border Control and Immigration Management System Training at the national headquarters in Abuja.
Addressing the gathering, the minister explained that the welfare upgrades include the implementation of hazard allowances and the promotion of no fewer than 50,000 personnel to clear lingering career backlogs. He added that the Federal Government has also expanded its recruitment quota, bringing in 40,000 new officers to strengthen the internal security sector.
The Minister of Interior disclosed that previous comptrollers-general received a meagre monthly pension of N130,000 prior to the presidential intervention.
“Previously, CGs had a pension of about N130,000; it was not encouraging. But what did the president do? He signed and approved salary for life for CGs and DCGs,” Tunji-Ojo stated.
The minister charged the active officers to justify the government’s sweeping investments by securing the nation’s borders and ensuring optimum service delivery to Nigerians.
