Operatives of the Oyo State Police Command have rescued a one-month-old baby girl who was allegedly sold for N2 million and arrested the child’s mother alongside the owner of a local health facility.
The incident occurred in the Ogunwade community within Ido Local Government Area of Ibadan. Police investigations were initiated on October 15 after the infant’s grandmother, Mary Amos, officially reported the sudden disappearance of the child to the authorities.
During interrogation, the child’s mother, identified as Cecilia, confessed to the crime and implicated a 40-year-old clinic owner, Adeleke, for facilitating the illicit transaction. The police revealed that the mother received N1 million, while the clinic owner and another accomplice split the remaining N1 million before handing the baby over to a buyer identified as Odunayo.
While the rescued infant is currently in safe custody, authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing to apprehend a fleeing suspect, Folawewo, to ensure all individuals connected to the crime are brought to justice.
The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, while confirming the rescue operation in a press statement on Friday, urged residents to remain vigilant and to report suspected cases of child trafficking and related offences to the police.
