Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), stated on Sunday that President Bola Tinubu is the only sole authority to remove him from office. Speaking during a thank you visit to the Obio-Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State, Wike responded to recent demands from political opponents and interest groups calling for his dismissal.
The calls for Wike’s removal emanated from a protracted political crisis in Rivers State. This friction has led to legislative deadlocks, legal challenges, and divided loyalties among state officials. Critics argue that Wike’s continued involvement in state politics while serving as a federal minister exacerbates the instability.
Meanwhile, Wike emphasized that his position is at the pleasure of the President, and that only the president can determine his fitness for the role.
Don’t bother about people who say sack him. If my appointor believes that I cannot offer anything again, he has the right; it is not in your place to tell him what to do. I chose to be a politician and not a pastor, a trader, a public commentator or journalist… allow [me] to play my politics – Wike stated
The Minister stated that political decisions are driven by interest rather than emotion.
