President Bola Tinubu has reportedly summoned Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara to separate meetings abroad to address the political crisis in Rivers State. This meeting was organized after the State House of Assembly initiated fresh impeachment proceedings against Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.
President Tinubu, currently in France for official engagements, according to PUNCH has reportedly summoned both Wike and Fubara for emergency talks in France and Dubai to prevent a total breakdown of law and order in the state.
The fight for power control between Governor Fubara and his former mentor, Nyesom Wike is not news. Recall, after the restoration of democratic rule, Fubara defected to the APC, but the legislative arm remains loyal to Wike.
Dawn Herald reported on Thursday that 26 lawmakers served notices of gross misconduct against Governor Fubara (7 counts) and Deputy Governor Odu (8 counts), over unconstitutional spending and the demolition of the Assembly complex.
The Assembly has adjourned until January 15, demanding a formal response to the allegations.
Speaker Martins Amaewhule insists the impeachment is a constitutional necessity to check executive excesses. During the plenary, the Speaker stated:
The notice is in the interest of Rivers State… the Governor has rebuffed entreaties to present the 2026 budget, thereby undermining the powers of the Assembly
According to the PUNCH, sources close to the Presidency stated that Tinubu views Wike’s recent action as a risk to national economic stability which downplays his previous intervention.
